New Music, New Hits

This year, music artists are flooding our Spotify with new hits.

American singer Ariana Grande recently released a new album called “Thank U, Next.” The song came out Nov. 3, 2018, and the music video currently has more than 310 million views on YouTube. Grande based the music video on her favorite movies, “Mean Girls,” “Legally Blonde,” “Bring it On,” and “13 Going on Thirty,” and recreated popular scenes from each. I remember the day the music video was released, and I immediately watched the video with a group of friends. I looked around and saw others watching the video as well on my way to class.

Also on the “Thank U, Next” album, Grande released a song called “7 Rings,” on Jan. 18, 2019. It was based off of the song “My Favorite Things” by Julie Andrews in the classic movie “The Sound of Music.” Because of the familiarity, people instantly loved the song, and it gained 190 million views on YouTube.

You want a break up anthem? She’s got it. On Feb. 8, 2019, Grande uploaded a music video for her new song “break up with your girlfriend, i’m bored,” guest starring “Riverdale” cast member Charles Melton, which has gained 93 million views so far. For the video, Grande cast someone that looked like her to act as the “Old Ariana” with brown hair, while she has platinum blonde hair in the video. I think that she was trying to show that she has changed and grown from the traumatic experiences in her life, including the death of her ex-boyfriend, American rapper Mac Miller. After that tragedy, she stayed silent from releasing new music until this year, when she released the “Thank U, Next” album.

American singer-songwriter Khalid also came out with a new song this year called “Talk.” Personally, this has become one of my favorite songs because of its catchy tune. The song is about Khalid wanting to communicate with his girlfriend about where they are headed in the future. I have always loved Khalid’s music, so I expected nothing less than an exceptional song with his calming voice, and that is what I got.

Singer-songwriter Avril Lavigne also came out with a new song on Feb. 15, 2019, called “Head Above Water.” This was a major comeback for her, as she was most popular in the 2000’s with songs including “Complicated” and “Sk8ter Boi.” Her strong, beautiful voice and moving words make the song so loveable. Lavigne sings about trying to overcome the struggles in her life when she says “Yeah, my life is what I’m fighting for” and “Don’t let me down, it gets harder.” She encourages listeners to fight for what they want in life, and they can overcome anything if they put their heart into it.

Next time you are browsing through your music and trying to decide what to listen to you, give these hits a chance. I can promise that you will not be disappointed.
