This year, we are excited to welcome new chemistry teacher Melissa Geinitz. We asked about her background and her new experiences at Pinewood.
Q: Where were you before you came to Pinewood?
A: I previously taught chemistry and biology at a private school in Zurich, Switzerland. After that, [my family and I] moved to London. I have a four-and-a-half year old and a one-and-a-half year old so I haven’t been teaching for the last four years. We moved to California two years ago, and now that my kids are a little bit older, I wanted to come back and work in the classroom again.
Q: How has teaching here been so far?
A: The classes have been wonderful. The students are interested, engaged, and enthusiastic about the labs and demonstrations we have done. It’s exciting.
Q: How long have you been teaching?
A: This will be my eleventh year.
Q: What are some of the subjects you have taught?
A: I have taught chemistry and biology at all different levels and I’ve taught math, as well.
Q: How does it feel to be teaching again?
A: I really like being with the students and teaching something that I really love and am interested in. It’s nice to be here a few days a week and also be with my kids a few days a week.
Q: Have you been to California previously?
A: Yes. I am from Colorado originally so I have visited California multiple times as a tourist and I was really excited to move to California.
Q: Why did you choose Pinewood?
A: I had heard from people that the school was really wonderful. I have some neighbors who have sent their children to Pinewood and I know [Jyoti] Sicina, who has always talked highly of what a warm school it is, and how the students are very well-rounded and motivated. It sounded like a great place. I love the small classes, the dedication to community, how hard students work and how invested they are in their education. In a short time period, I have already felt that come through.
We are certainly thrilled to have Ms. Geinitz as an addition to the Pinewood community and look forward to seeing her in the halls.
