Cultivating Stories

In October, “Cultivated,” Pinewood’s new podcast, released its first episode, available on Veracross. It was a two-part spotlight in which all four members of the Lemmon family sat around their dinner table and talked about their lives before Pinewood. Freshman Magnolia Lemmon enjoyed talking about her life in Mexico.

“I enjoyed being a part of Cultivated, because I think it allows Pinewood to get an idea of who the Lemmon family is,” Lemmon said.

Pinewood’s Director of Communications and creator of “Cultivated” Katy Catron wanted to create a new medium to share stories with Pinewood’s community. “[Cultivated] gives our community a new avenue through which to experience the awesome, fun, lively, and vibrant culture that we have here at Pinewood,” Catron said.

The podcast’s most recent episode featured Arnav Aggarwal ‘18 who spoke about his life before, during, and after his cancer diagnosis. In fact, Aggarwal is part of the reason Catron started the serialized online project.

“I wanted to share Arnav’s story, but I thought it would be way more compelling to hear his voice,” Catron said.

Creating the episodes was more time-consuming than Catron expected, so professional radio producer Mike Matthews has been helping her edit them. In the future, Catron hopes to have a team of students to assist with making music, editing, and interviewing.

“I’m kicking it off so it can potentially grow and have a future at this school,” Catron said.

Cultivated is still new, but Catron hopes to help it expand by interviewing people from all Pinewood campuses.

“My goal is to do stories that are K-12, so that people at all three campuses can get a good sense of what the whole school culture is like,” Catron explained.
