Senior Sean Murphy has rightfully earned the title of athlete of the month for the varsity football team. Murphy plays wide receiver on offense and cornerback on defense, as well as returns kicks and punts for Pinewood. With a total of 85 total yards in the game on Sept. 8 versus Cornerstone Christian, 20 rushing and 65 receiving, he helped Pinewood dominate the game in its 62-0 victory. Murphy also scored three touchdowns in this game and most of his other stats rocket above the national average. Murphy received the game ball in the game against Trinity.

“Sean is in beast mode right now and no defender can stop him. Ankles will be broken,” assistant coach Jackee Bruno said.

Volleyball’s exceptional athlete of the month is Maddi Escher. Her most impressive statistic so far this year is an unbelievable 0.286 hitting average. In addition, she has 39 kills, a number that soars over the national average. Escher has a total of 9 aces this year, making 25 percent of her serves aces. She is the heart of the volleyball team and has been on varsity for all four years of her high school career. Sophomore Annika Duan has thoroughly enjoyed being on Escher’s team this year.

“Maddi is a great teammate, and she is really talented and skilled. I’m super excited to be on the team with her this year,” Duan said.

Julia Owens is this month’s outstanding tennis player. She has always been an incredible player, but this year she has matured into an incredible leader as well. Owens won tough sets against Fremont High School and Notre Dame Belmont High School this month. She shines out on the court and has been playing varsity tennis since her freshman year. In total, Owens has played ten years of tennis and her teammates love playing with her.

“When Julia plays she is super focused and she gives each match her all,”sophomore teammate Esmi Pistelak said.
